About
About Us
The Red Lion is a family‑run, historic country pub nestled in the heart of Hooe village, combining centuries of charm with warm, contemporary hospitality.
Originally built in 1495 and converted into a pub in the 1600s, The Red Lion has deep roots in local lore. Once a haunt for smugglers and customs men, the building's attic once housed a secret tobacco mill — contributing to the phrase "money for old rope."
Today, Hayley and Marc, the pub offers a relaxed yet refined environment, where historic features blend seamlessly with thoughtful, modern touches. The Red Lion retains many traditional features — exposed beams, inglenook fireplaces, a snug, multiple bars, and period character throughout.
What We Offer
Food & Drink, locally sourced cuisine, put together with care and seasonal attention. The menu includes pub classics, vegetarian/vegan options, and regular seasonal specials. Every dish is made to order, and the team happily accommodates dietary requirements and allergies.
On the drinks side, there's a curated selection of local real ales, fine wines and gins.
The focus is on warm, welcoming service — whether you're a regular from nearby or visiting the area.
You get more than just a pub meal — you get a story, history, and character in a setting that feels both timeless and friendly. It's a place for community, for memorable dinners, and for celebrating in style (without pretension). Whether you're drawn by the food, the ales, or the whisper of legends, The Red Lion offers an experience rooted in authenticity.
