About

Covering over 10 square miles, Ashdown Forest is one of the largest open access areas in Southeast England.  Situated within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, its lowland heathland and deciduous woodland habitats are home to many rare and threatened species.

With a rich human history from Kings and commoners to smuggling and industry dating back centuries, Ashdown Forest is also the setting of the Winnie-the-Pooh stories.

Ashdown Forest is a walker’s paradise and it is the most popular activity that takes place on the Forest. Wide open spaces, far-reaching views, and tranquil wooded areas, ever-changing with the seasons. All that is needed to escape into the joy of the Forest is a pair of sturdy shoes!

There are numerous paths, fire breaks and rides criss-crossing the heathland and woodland trails for visitors to explore and enjoy. The terrain is mostly rough and undulating, with some steep climbs and slopes, so not everywhere is suitable for prams or wheelchairs.  After rain the Forest can be muddy and slippery
