About
Herstmonceux Castle is rich in history dating back to the 15th Century, commissioned by Sir Roger Fiennes, Treasurer to the Household of Henry VI. The moated castle was purchased and then gifted to Queen’s University, Canada by industrialist and philanthropist Alfred Bader and his wife Isabel. The south west gatehouse and adjacent elevation is currently undergoing restoration works.
Herstmonceux Castle itself boasts 15th-century architecture and stunning gardens, with expansive grounds, woodland trails, and a moat perfect for picnics. You can wander within the Walled Elizabethan Garden or stroll around the Shakespeare Garden that reflects the academic nature of the castle, all the planting within this garden, except the Ebbinge’s silverberry hedge (Elaeagnus x submacrophylla) are mentioned in the works of Shakespeare. A wander around the garden will reveal that the plant labels give the quote and name of the Shakespeare play or sonnet where mention of the plant can be found.
Castle tours and events offer glimpses into its storied past. Outdoor enthusiasts will find the nearby Pevensey Levels ideal for bird-watching, and the South Downs National Park offers trails for hiking and cycling amidst breathtaking scenery. Families will enjoy the Observatory Science Centre, with hands-on exhibits and giant telescopes.
